The United States experienced a nationwide outbreak of enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) associated with severe respiratory illness in late 2014 and early 2015. West Virginia was among states with confirmed EV-D68. Increases in severe respiratory illness can be caused by many different viruses that are common this time of year. EV-D68 appeared to be the predominant type of enterovirus in those years and may be contribute to increases in severe respiratory illnesses.
