St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) is an arbovirus (arthropod borne virus) transmitted by mosquitoes and was first identified in the 1930s as an important cause of mosquito-borne encephalitis in humans. SLE has been reported in nearly every state in the continental United States. SLE is not commonly reported in West Virginia residents.
