Western Equine Encephalitis (WEE)

ABOUT

Western equine encephalitis (WEE) is an arbovirus (arthropod borne virus) transmitted by mosquitoes and was first identified in the 1930s as an important cause of encephalitis in horses; however, humans can also contract disease as well. Most reported cases of WEE infection are west of the Mississippi River. WEE is not commonly reported in West Virginia residents.
